Student Assistance Program
What is the Student Assistance Program?
Newton High School's Student Assistance Program is designed to be of assistance to students and their families with problems that may be escalating. The program also provides assistance to teachers in dealing with students who may be having problems outside the classroom.
What types of problems can the Student Assistance Program help address?
The service is designed to help students with personal problems; eg., family conflict, alcohol dependence and abuse, drug abuse, eating disorders, depression, emotional problems, gender identity, sexual orientation, and bereavement issues. Sometimes, help makes the difference between resolving a problem early or going through a long period of struggle.
Will I have to pay for this program?
No! Newton High School offers this service free of charge to students and their families. If out-of-school assistance is necessary, family health insurance may be used. If assistance is necessary that is not covered by insurance, the program will offer suggestions regarding referrals to the most appropriate agency.
Does the Program apply to school problems such as scheduling or college planning?
No! The Student Assistance Program does not focus on these issues.
The program addresses personal and social problems which affect academic performance.
Does this Program replace other Newton High School services?
No! The Student Assistance Program is part of a total support program that may also include the Counseling Services Department, the Child Study Team, et. al.
Why is Newton High School providing this service?
Problems, even when unrelated to school, can adversely affect school performance. By offering help, the student and school will benefit. The program is a proven method for:
Developing effective problem-solving measures.
Reducing absenteeism and lateness.
Reducing the drop-out rate.
Increasing school performance.
Building morale by extending help to those who need it.
Providing support to students and families at Newton High School.
Building a sense of wellness.
How do I make an appointment with the Counselor?
Students and/or parents may telephone the school and ask for the Student Assistance Counselor. An appointment will be arranged where the student and parent/guardian may talk freely and confidentially.
A teacher or counselor may seek the services of the Counselor regarding observed academic and behavioral changes in a student.
Confidentiality is an important aspect of the program.
Almost every human problem can be successfully dealt with if identified and treated early.
A referral to the Student Assistance Program can very well save someone's life.
